Signatures filed for two important initiative petitions

When the office closed at 5:00 p.m., signatures had been filed for the following petitions: Amending the constitution to allow for municipal control of the St. Louis police department; increasing Missouri’s cigarette tax to 90 cents; capping annual interest rates, finance charges and fees on payday loans at 36 percent; and raising Missouri’s minimum wage to $8.25.

The secretary of state’s office is now tasked with certifying each of the petitions. In addition to working with local officials to determine whether each signer is a registered voter, the office will also determine whether there are signatures from six of the nine congressional districts.
